Fans furious over Keeley red herring

FANS of Bodyguard were scammed by sneaky writer Jed Mercurio into thinking Home Secretary Julia Montague was still alive.

The show’s creator had helped fuel the rumour that she was not killed during the bomb attack at the end of episode three.

Last night’s finale was hailed as the

“telly event of the year” as Sgt David

Budd is framed for his one-time lover’s murder by an organised crime group.

The organisation was helped by his police boss Chief Supt Lorraine Craddock (Pippa Haywood), who turned out to be the inside mole.

In a frantic last episode David, played by hunky Scottish actor Richard Madden, 32, found himself beaten up by a gang of heavies and had a suicide vest strapped to his body before solving the gripping mystery.

And in a final twist, it is revealed that Nadia Ali, the wife of a terrorist who had appeared to be helping the operation, built all the bombs herself, including the one that killed 42-year-old Keeley Hawes’ character Julia.

Success

Bodyguard is expected to win a string of awards at next year’s Baftas after topping 10million viewers per episode.

Jed hinted in the build-up to last night’s finale that he might have thrown in a huge twist and saved Julia’s life.

He later said: “I don’t feel a great responsibility to tell the truth, so it doesn’t really matter what I say.

“I tell the truth where it’s the ethical thing to do, but in terms of entertainment there’s a certain fun and a certain enjoyment that can be added to the experience by a few judicious lies.”

The thrilling ending also reveals that David was planted in his role as Julia’s personal protection by the crime syndicate and the police informant.

Crime boss Luke Aitkens, played by Matt Stokoe, branded the character “the perfect fall guy”.

The show’s success also led to a slew of bets on hunky Madden becoming the next James Bond actor, while bookies are also predicting it will be the highest watched non-Christmas show of the year.

Coral’s John Hill said: “Bodyguard has been one of the most popular dramas for many years and the odds suggest the finale could be one of the most watched programmes of 2018.

“Madden has impressed throughout the series and his odds are shortening all the time to be the next 007.”
