Sam ready for Warriors war cry

- By JULIE STOTT

SAM TOMKINS has warned that emotion alone won’t be enough at Old Trafford tomorrow.

The full-back is quitting Wigan after the Grand Final against Warrington, along with John Bateman and Ryan Sutton.

Warriors coach Shaun Wane also bids a tearful farewell after 30 years at the club as a player and coach. But Tomkins (left) said: “You only get a trophy through sacrifice and hard work. There is all the romance of people leaving and there is no doubt that Shaun will be emotional. We want to win for all 40 people in the squad, not just for the people leaving.”

Tomkins says he’s coping well with leaving to join Catalans – because he’s already done it once.

He left in 2013 for a two-year spell at New Zealand Warriors and said: “That was tougher because I was stepping into the unknown.

“I was on my own 12,000 miles away in a different competition. This time I’m going 1,000 miles with my family and staying in Super League. I am comfortable with it.

“But it would be a dream if I could leave Wigan with a Grand Final winners’ ring.”

Tomkins, whose form has earned him an England recall, also had bad news for Wigan fans hoping their favourite son might return one day.

He said: “I have a four-year deal at Catalans and I am 29 now so I do not think I’ll play for Wigan again.

“Wigan is part of my family and it’s a great club and I’d never say never – but I’d say it’s highly doubtful.”
