Posh hitman happy he has come up the hard way

MATT GODDEN has no regrets after passionately celebrating his goals against the club who shunned him as a youngster.

Peterborough striker Godden came through the Scunthorpe youth system but spent five years being sent on loan repeatedly to non-League teams.

He came back to Glanford Park on Saturday and struck twice against his former employers to move joint top of the League One scorers chart with nine.

The first goal was celebrated with him flinging a right fist joyfully and the second effort was greeted with a dash to the jubilant away fans.

Posh star Godden, 27, said: “Why not celebrate when you’re doing your job? I’m going to celebrate whenever I score.

Egos

“If I’d played 400 or 500 games for Scunthorpe – maybe even 200 – then maybe there would be different feelings. But I played probably about 15 games.”

Although Godden was forced to drop down and work his way back up the hard way, he is happy to have been through it.

The striker said: “Nowadays not many people want to do it.

“They all want the status of playing Premier League, Championship, League One. The game nowadays is a lot about egos.

“I’ve not got an ego. I thought it was important to drop down into nonLeague to try to rebuild my career and luckily it’s happened the way it has and I’m back up in League One.

“It’s probably come from my parents, to always have a good attitude, and that’s probably something that has gone out of the game a little bit.

“But I come in to clubs with an open mind and listen.”

Listening to Peterborough’s feisty manager Steve Evans has paid off for him, with the

Scot demanding graft.

Godden said: “My game is built around harassing defenders and he has got me doing that.”

Scunthorpe’s players have been looking far more fragile and boss Stuart McCall wants a change of mindset.

He said: “I had belief that we would get a goal, but two or three of them don’t seem to believe it.

“We’ve got more belief in them than they seem to have in themselves.”
