THREE KILLED AS CARAVAN GOES WRONG WAY UP M40
THREE people died when a car towing a caravan drove the wrong way along the M40 and ploughed into two cars.
Dashcam footage showed the Subaru Forester heading south on the northbound carriageway.
The vehicle is said to have gone the wrong way for up to five miles and seven minutes before the fatal crash.
It hit two other cars, a Ford Mondeo and a Ford Focus. The driver and a passenger in the Subaru, said to be husband and wife in their 80s, both died.
A man in his 30s – who was the driver of the Mondeo – was also killed.
Videos filmed before the crash showed the Subaru driving down the outside lane, causing several cars to swerve out of its way.
Sonia Thomson, from Staffordshire, was driving in the outside lane of the motorway when she realised the Subaru was heading towards her.
The cabin steward for British Airways said: “It was going so fast… it was almost past me in the blink of an eye.
“Someone must have been looking after me because 10-20 seconds later and that could have been me.” Drivers who saw the car reported on social media it had foreign number plates.
The road was closed for about 14 hours as emergency services attended the scene in Stokenchurch, Bucks, on Monday.
Sergeant Beth Walton, from Thames Valley Police, said: “We are in the early stages of the investigation, in which sadly three people died, and our thoughts are with their families.
“We are in the process of contacting witnesses who provided a report to us.”
Meanwhile a woman is fighting for her life after a second major collision on the M40.
She suffered serious injuries to her hand and face when a Lexus she was a passenger in collided with a refuse lorry. The air ambulance was called.
A second passenger in the Lexus and the driver suffered minor injuries.
