Newbie Nat too excited

- By JEREMY CROSS

NATHANIEL CHALOBAH was so excited about his England debut he blanked the man who gave it to him.

The midfielder admits he was in dreamland after appearing as a second-half substitute in the stunning defeat of Spain.

Chalobah was a shock inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s squad after starting the season injured and making just three appearances for Watford.

And he was in such a daze on his debut he could not remember the instructions Southgate had given him.

The former Chelsea man said: “I don’t even think I heard what he was saying when I went on. I was just thinking so much about the game.

Honest

“I was so eager to jump on the pitch. Now I think about it, I probably do remember what he said, but at the time it was almost like, ‘Oh my god, I’m about to make my debut.’

“I can’t really put it into words if I’m honest with you. I’ve waited a long time for it and I’m chuffed. Can you think of some words for me?

“I was a little bit surprised to be called up because I haven’t been playing.

“My situation at my club is obviously very difficult at the minute because we started very well and we’re winning games.”

Chalobah, 23, admits nobody was getting carried away in the dressing room after the 3-2 triumph.

He said: “None of us were jumping around celebrating. It was very, very calm.

“We’ve got winners in the changing room. A lot of players in there who want

to win.”
