ROW: Ricky Gervais and medal winner Rachel McKinnon

RICKY Gervais last night joined the row over a trans woman who won gold in a women’s world cycling event.

Rachel McKinnon finished top at the UCI Masters in Los Angeles last weekend.

But as the LGBTQ community celebrated her success, others questioned whether the former man should even have been competing. Comedian Ricky said: “Women’s heavyweight boxing is gonna get f ****** interesting.

“Yeah, she’s done well there. I’m sure all the women she beat will try even harder next year.”

Celebrity Big Brother star and trans newsreader India Willoughby agreed.

She added: “With Ricky. T women shouldn’t be doing these type of sports competitively. It’s not just about hormones. It’s about physiology, aerobic capacity, length of stride.

“Have a bit of common sense.”

Fans responding to Ricky joked they were going to enter their horse in Crufts.

Third placed rider Jen Wagner-Assali also complained online that the result was not fair.

But Rachel, who is an assistant professor in the department of philosophy at South Carolina’s College of Charleston, defended her victory.

She said: “Lots of transphobic bigots are responding to my world championship win saying that: ‘Next up, the Paralympics.’

“You know what gives me hope and strength? Emails from the parents of trans kids who are crushing it and having fun in sport.”
