Rivals Haye and Chisora join forces

- By CHRIS McKENNA

DEREK CHISORA has signed up David Haye as his manager – six years after threatening to shoot him.

The British heavyweight duo made the shock announcement yesterday. They infamously fought at a press conference in Munich in 2012 following Chisora’s defeat to Vitali Klitschko.

Haye punched Chisora who responded with threats to “shoot” and “burn” his rival.

Chisora, 34, lost his British licence over the shameful incident but later lured former world champ Haye out of retirement for a fight at Upton Park under the Luxembourg Boxing Federation.

The pair were separated by a steel fence at a press conference before the fight in which Haye knocked out Chisora in the fifth round.

“David is one of very few managers who have themselves won world titles,” said Chisora, who has ditched his ‘Del Boy’ nickname for ‘War’ and also dropped the ‘c’ from the spelling of his first name.

“He knows what it is like to step in the ring putting everything, including your life, on the line.”

“I’m at a point in my career I know I cannot afford to make mistakes.

“I’ve realised I need to live the life of a professional if I am to achieve what I know I am capable of. To all heavyweights out there who think Derek Chisora has had his time, missed his moment, you’re wrong, this is just the beginning, this is war.”

Chisora had been in talks with promoter Eddie Hearn over a rematch with Dillian Whyte for December 22 but it is not clear if that is still in his plans.

Haye added: “Boxing is a sport where, inside those ropes, beef can be squashed and replaced with the type of respect forged between two warriors in the heat of battle.”

SAUL ‘CANELO’ ALVAREZ, who steps up to super-middleweight to face Liverpool’s Rocky Fielding on December 15 in New York, has signed a record-breaking £280m 11-fight, five-year broadcast deal with streaming service DAZN.
