DON’T BLOW IT MESUT

Wenger urges Germany return

- By PAUL BROWN

ARSENE WENGER believes Germany need Mesut Ozil back and that his Arsenal form could dip unless he ends his international retirement.

The former Gunners boss, who revealed he expects to be back in management in January, reckons Germany’s recent slump is down to Ozil’s absence.

The midfielder retired after Joachim Low’s men endured a miserable early exit at the World Cup, and things have got worse for his countrymen since.

The Germans have lost their last two competitive games, to Holland and France, and are in a full-blown crisis with the future of Low (below) in doubt.

Wenger said: “I believe that Germany needs Ozil. I hope that Low can convince him that he will come back.

“Ozil is a super football player and was not the worst in the World Cup. I did not like that he left the team.

“A little bit of motivation disappears when you know that you do not have to be ready for the World Cup and European Championship.

“I love it when the player is as good as possible. If he does not play on an international level, a bit is lost.”

Ozil, who cited concerns over racism when he quit the national team, has three goals and no assists in eight games for Arsenal this season.

Gunners boss Unai Emery was forced to deny reports of a bust-up between the pair after his side beat West Ham in August.

Emery replaced Wenger in the hot seat at the Emirates after the Frenchman brought down the curtain on his time in charge last season.

Wenger claims he has been inundated with offers to return to management and is getting ready to make his comeback in the dugout.

The 68-year-old, who dismissed reports linking him with Bayern

Munich, said: “I believe that I’ll start again on Jan 1.”

He hinted he could take up a role with a national team or in Japan, where he once managed Nagoya Grampus Eight.

Wenger added: “I don’t know yet where I’m headed. I am rested, and I am ready to work again.”
