SHAYNE RAGE AT CORRIE SUICIDE SNUB

No gong for gritty soap plot

- by JERRY LAWTON

ACTOR Shayne Ward says he is “really hurt” to miss out on a National Television Award nomination for his Corrie suicide storyline.

Fans praised the gritty plot, which saw Aidan Connor take his life.

SHAYNE Ward was “really hurt” to miss out on a National Television Award nod for his Corrie suicide storyline.

The actor, who played Aidan Connor, said he was lost for words after being overlooked for a gong.

Richard Hawley, who played his dad Johnny, was also snubbed – though six other stars of the show were on the 26-strong list of nominees for Best Serial Drama Performance.

They were Jack P Shepherd (David Platt), Sally Ann Matthews (Jenny Connor), Simon Gregson (Steve McDonald), Sally Dynevor (Sally Metcalfe), Joe Duttine (Tim Metcalfe) and Beverley Callard (Liz McDonald).

Deserved

Shayne, 34, tweeted his congratulations to them and said their nominations were fully deserved. But he added: “This was the one I worked hard for. It’s always a blessing to be put forward for a nomination and I’m always humbled.

“But to have not even been considered for Best Serial Drama Performance for Aidan’s suicide has really hurt me.

“No nod for @RichardHawley1 too Lost for words.’’ He later deleted the tweet after being mercilessly trolled .

One viewer wrote: “Can someone let Shayne Ward know he’s a pathetic piece of s***.” What a c***,’’ wrote another. A third said: “So that was his motivation – not great.’’ Another added:

“I can understand his frustrations and think he did deserve a nomination.... but then surely the fact he’s helped so many people is the biggest award in it all.’’

The actor later apologised for his tweet and insisted he hoped a nomination would have kept the suicide issue in the public domain.

He said: “I’m sorry if my tweet was misconstrued by some people. I really thought it was an important issue that I wanted to draw attention to again.”

The nominations will be whittled down to a shortlist unveiled days before January’s ceremony.
