Rom: I aim to be Bel-ter for United

- By GIDEON BROOKS

ROMELU LUKAKU believes he will replicate his red-hot Belgium form for Manchester United just as soon as his team-mates understand him better.

The striker goes into tonight’s Champions League clash against Juventus with a marked contrast in form for club and country.

It is now seven matches without finding the net for United – equalling his worst run in red – but he has bagged 15 goals in his last 13 matches on the international stage during the same period.

But Lukaku insists the goals will start to flow once he develops better connections on the pitch.

Better

“I’ve been playing with Belgium for 10 years, since I was 16, and players know me much more,” he said.

“Here I still think my teamwork between myself and my team-mates can improve further and be much better.

“But it’s something that we’re working on. The players need to know me and know my movement and I need to know their movements.

“When that starts clicking the results I have with Belgium will come here.”

Lukaku went nine games without a goal for Everton at the tail end of the 2015-16 season and seven matches without scoring this time last year in his debut campaign in Manchester.

And while he has not looked at his best so far this season, he says United’s recent upturn in fortunes can spark a revival.

He said: “The mood is really positive. Obviously we’re disappointed how the game at Chelsea ended (2-2).

“It’s going to take time to be where we want to be but the last two games have shown we can play, we can press forward and we have played to make a difference.

“Now the work that we’re doing behind the scenes has to be turned into wins.”

United have been slow out of the traps of late with poor first-half displays.

But Lukaku admitted they will not get away with a sluggish opening period against Juventus, and said: “It’s something we need to get out of our systems. The key is to start games like we do in the second half.”

A Juventus side unbeaten in 11 matches in all competitions this season, and with a defence breached just six times so far this campaign, presents a formidable challenge.

But Lukaku is up for the challenge, adding: “They will be a really difficult side but we are really prepared for the game.

“We are going to do our best and see where we stand against one of the best teams in Europe.”
