NO VAN DO!

Mum’s ‘disgusting’ driver job rejection

- By RUTH McKEE ruth.mckee@dailystar.co.uk

A WOMAN rejected for a job as a van driver at a waste removal company is now claiming discrimination.

Teresa Everett, 39, was told the job required heavy-lifting and the firm “would not allow females to do that kind of work”.

But the single mum of two said: “It’s disgusting. How can a company in 21st Century Britain refuse a job based on a woman’s gender, especially as I match all of the job requirements?”

Teresa is livid the firm thinks she is weak because she is a woman and fumed: “This has crossed the line.”

The £9-an-hour job was as a “Waste Removal Operative Driver & Labourer” with Clearbee, the UK’s largest in-house rubbish removal company.

Security worker Teresa, of Southampton, was told just minutes after applying that “at the moment we are only looking for male drivers/labourers”.

When the mum said she had all the right skills and experience, she was told: “This role requires heavy lifting and physical work. We would not allow females to do this kind of work.”

But Teresa said the company’s decision “undermined the physical ability of a woman to undertake heavy lifting roles”.

A company spokesman said it was a rogue recruiter who threw out Teresa’s application. He said the rejection was “completely at odds with our beliefs and employment policies”.
