GREGGS BAN FOR ‘FAT’ BRIT SOLDIERS

- BAKE OFF: Squaddies are banned from Greggs by MARK CHANDLER

ARMY chiefs have banned squaddies from tucking into Greggs pasties to stop them getting fat.

Troops have been barred from the bakery chain amid fears its steak bakes and sausage rolls will see them pile on the pounds.

But some soldiers have vowed to visit the chain in disguise and carry on munching.

One declared: “If I have to go for my pasty in disguise, so be it.

“It is ridiculous for commanders to suggest that we bring the regiment into disrepute because we stand outside Greggs eating pasties.

“We’re not all fatties and it’s not like the food at the Army canteen is any healthier than what we get at Greggs – and Greggs is cheaper.”

Military chiefs at Catterick Garrison in Richmond, North Yorks, implemented the ban over fears scoffing pastries made the Army “look unprofessional”.

Members of the Royal Dragoon Guards have been warned “under no circumstances” should they stand in the street munching pastries.

They also face curbs on text messaging and smoking as they walk through town.

Sergeants and corporals have been ordered to inform on soldiers who break the rules.

Recent figures show that nearly one in 10 British troops are clinically obese.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said: “Healthy living and fitness in the armed forces is of vital importance.

“Our personnel are required to pass fitness tests and failures are provided with diet and fitness support.”
