Neal’s glad to quench a first

SUPER sub Ben Brereton is happy getting his learner plates with Blackburn.

Brereton, who is learning to drive, came off the bench to win the late penalty which allowed Rovers to snatch an unlikely victory.

Bradley Dack slotted home the 87th-minute spot-kick as Tony Mowbray’s side climbed to eighth in the table.

“If the gaffer puts me on I’ll always do my best, work hard for the team and hope to help with goals,” said Brereton, 19, who is on loan from Nottingham Forest.

“As long as I’m playing I’m happy, it doesn’t matter where it is. I’ll always work hard for the team.

“And I enjoy my driving lessons – it relaxes me.’’

Brereton had been on for five minutes when he went down in the box after a Josh Scowen challenge.

Dack made no mistake from the spot after striker Danny Graham had earlier wasted two good chances to punish QPR.

“I think it was a penalty,” said Brereton. “I felt that bit of contact and went down. Thankfully the referee gave it. I wanted the penalty, but Dacky’s taken the ball and he’s a top lad so I decided to let him have it.

“We’re always pushing each other in training. That shows off with results so we hope to keep pushing up that table.”

Graham had a shot saved by Rangers keeper Joe Lumley after only 50 seconds and later lashed into the side-netting.

For Rangers, Luke Freeman shot wide and Nahki Wells had a goalbound shot charged down and this otherwise drab contest looked destined to finish goalless.

But Brereton’s arrival proved pivotal and Mowbray said: “All the substitutes will be given their chances and that includes Brereton. He made a good impact.”

Angry Rangers boss Steve McClaren insisted: “It was never a penalty, we didn’t deserve to lose.

“The referee had a poor game today. Some of his decisions were simply mind-boggling.”
