I’ll relight fire says Howson

-

NORWICH boss Daniel Farke knows the Canaries’ young wings are likely to be clipped.

But the German’s bold claim is that there is no side in “western Europe’’ with such fledgling fliers.

When Farke talked about “wings’’ in the wake of a fourth straight league victory, he was surely referring to overlapping full-backs Max Aarons, 18, and Jamal Lewis, 20.

Either way, it made sense as Aarons’ run and centre helped to set up the third goal, and Teemu Pukki’s second of the game, in the Canaries’ first win at Hillsborough for nearly 17 years.

Farke, appointed in May 2017, looks to have turned Norwich into genuine promotion contenders.

He said: “Last season was difficult. We were in transition because the club was relegated and finished around mid-table the next season.

“We were under unbelievable financial pressure, we had to sell our best players, so it was not bad to finish near mid-table last season. It’s an unbelievably young squad and I think no team in the whole of western Europe is playing with such young wings.’’

So, can the Canaries stay up there? “If we’re realistic, no, because we have so many young lads on the pitch,’’ said Farke.

Finland star Pukki, a summer signing from Danish side Brondby, is one of the freebies producing the goods.

Argentinian winger Emi Buendia and German striker Dennis Srbeny also scored as Wednesday, who face a daunting Steel City derby at Sheffield United on Friday, fell apart.

It would have been worse if Cameron Dawson had not saved Mario Vrancic’s penalty.

Under-pressure Owls boss Jos Luhukay said: “Maybe it’s the same situation as last season when I came – the derby was the first game. That was also not a nice period with all the injuries. We have a new chance to be successful on Friday.’’
