IF you had discovered your grandfather was a serial bigamist, you’d be forgiven for branding him a “love rat”.

But surprisingly, that’s not the view of actress Ruth Wilson.

The star of The Affair and Luther found out her grandad Alexander had three secret wives. This amazing tale has now been turned into a BBC drama airing on November 27.

However, she is not angry at him and says: “I never thought of him as a cad. He was a deep soul and was a good dad. All of his children have such love for him and fond memories.”

In this drama, Ruth takes the lead role playing her grandmother, Alison.

She married writer and MI6 agent Alexander in the 1940s and the couple had two children. Following his death, she got a visit from a woman claiming to be his wife, too. Ruth only found out about her family’s tangled history as her gran left a detailed memoir about what had happened. However, when they dug deeper, they discovered he actually had two more secret wives.

Ruth said: “Gran only knew about one. We found out about two more after she died. Thank God she didn’t know.”

Asked if she had discovered why he had secretly married four times, Ruth said: “We don’t know if the marriages were partly for work or were for love.

“We don’t know what his role in the secret service was. MI6 won’t release the records. He remains a man of mystery.”
