MAY: REBELS RISK BREXIT BREAKDOWN
Leader refuses to quit
DEFIANT Theresa May yesterday warned Brexit could be cancelled if Tory plotters try to kick her out of No10.
The Prime Minister said she was not considering quitting, despite rebels lining up to mount a leadership challenge.
Instead she warned those who want her out risk scuppering Brexit – and stopping Britain from leaving the EU forever.
Mrs May said: “A change of leadership at this point isn’t going to make the negotiations any easier. What it will do is bring in a degree of uncertainty. That is uncertainty for people and their jobs.
“What it will do is risk that we delay the negotiations.”
And Mrs May claimed voting down her deal could lead to a second referendum, saying: “There are those in the House of Commons who just want to stop Brexit.
“I believe it is essential for people’s trust in politics and people’s trust in Parliament that we deliver Brexit.”
The PM is currently trying to fight off furious Brexiteers plotting to get rid of her. If 48 MPs write to Tory backbench chief Sir Graham Brady, he must arrange a vote of confidence.
But Sir Graham insisted yesterday it was “very likely” Mrs May would win a no-confidence vote.
Former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, who quit on Thursday, said he had held talks with Cabinet ministers hoping to rewrite the PM’s deal.
Meanwhile, Boris Johnson and David Davis are said to be lining up to fight it out to replace Mrs May.
