Bats hit a £40m dream

- By WILL STONE

DELAYS: Rare guest A UNIVERSITY’s plans to build a £40million teaching block have been scuppered by a family of rare whiskered bats.

The discovery of the protected mammals means the project will be delayed by about a year.

Staffordshire University’s Brindley building, in Stoke-on-Trent, was due to be levelled to make way for a new state-of-theart structure.

But after tests on bat poo that was found the plans have been put on hold.

Senior life sciences lecturer David Skingsley said the find was positive as it meant that winter roosts were able “to survive and flourish”.

MAJOR supermarket corner shops can be up to 15% dearer than a chain’s megastore.

A Daily Star investigation found local versions of big-name stores often charge more for the same foods.

We tested the theory that “metro” store versions are more expensive.

And comparing the prices of a dozen random groceries at the big four – Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons – threw up some surprising results.

We found shopping costs are almost 15% higher when buying the same items from either a Tesco Express or Sainsbury’s Local than at their bigger supermarkets. A single banana costs more than twice as much at both supermarkets’ local shops and there was more than a quid difference when buying 160 bags of Yorkshire Tea at a Sainsbury’s Local. A tub of Flora spread cost twice as much at a Tesco Express compared to one of its big stores.

Asda won the battle of the supermarkets
