Seamus out to end Anfield jinx
SEAMUS COLEMAN was not shy in offering his view that Everton’s record against neighbours Liverpool is “embarrassing”.
And the Toffees defender insists there can be no excuses if their horror run against their rivals continues when they meet again on Sunday.
This narrow win over Cardiff, thanks to Gylfi Sigurdsson’s second-half strike, means Marco Silva’s side have won five of their last seven Premier League games.
But they have not beaten Liverpool since October 2010, when Mikel Arteta and Tim
Cahill scored in what was Coleman’s first Merseyside derby.
“It is quite embarrassing that is the last time that we beat them,” said Coleman.
“I don’t want to say the same old things I have said before every derby and then we don’t turn up.
“We don’t want to make all the headlines and then the fans say, ‘We’ve heard that before’. We have to do it on the pitch.”
Everton’s record at Anfield, side, who are unbeaten in the Premier League this season.
“I can tell you fear is not one word in our dressing room,” Silva said.
The Portuguese manager insists he will treat this week like any other and, after Saturday’s win, is more concerned about looking at his side’s performance against Cardiff.
Sigurdsson got the winner and his seventh of the season when he fired home after Theo Walcott’s low strike was parried into his path by Bluebirds keeper Neil Etheridge.
Hinted
But it was the performance of on-loan midfielder Andre Gomes that really stood out as Silva hinted he will be keen to land the Barcelona star on a permanent deal in the summer.
“In the right moment, we have to do something to achieve one player like Andre,” he said.
Cardiff boss Neil Warnock is planning a recruitment drive after his side remained without an away win this season and with just two victories all campaign.
“It’s not easy in January,” he said. “But I think we have to do some business to give ourselves a fighting chance.”
