WHAT’S HOT TO WATCH TODAY

- MIKE WARD

SIX tonnes of potatoes,

4,000 frozen chickens,

45,000 toilet rolls… No, that isn’t Gregg and John’s shopping list for the next series of MasterChef but just part of what’s needed on board the Royal Navy’s HMS Duncan as it leaves on its latest mission, a seven-month deployment to the Black Sea.

The £1billion destroyer, plus its crew of 280, are the subject of a new Channel 5 documentary series, WARSHIP: LIFE AT SEA

(9pm). But none of the crew seems to know their mission’s purpose.

Well, not to begin with. What slowly becomes clear is they’re heading into sensitive territory, with the Black Sea’s north-east corner bordering Russia and Crimea.

Will the Russians take kindly to the arrival of HMS Duncan and other NATO warships? Er, not exactly…

Still, scaring this crew won’t be easy.

“I’m not that worried,” insists the youngest, 18-year-old Owen, when told they’re on a potential collision course with the Russians.

That’s good. Because, if they do start to brick it, I’m not sure those 45,000 loo rolls will be enough. ELSEWHERE, BABIES: THEIR WONDERFUL WORLD (9pm, BBC2) is a fascinating look at how humans develop in their first two years, based on a new study.

At one point it reveals that 75 per cent of toddlers now use smartphones and tablets on a daily basis. Yes, really.

And how much harm is it doing them? Well, would you believe me if I told you it was boosting their development, at least according to the evidence here?

Nope, didn’t think you would. Don’t know why I bother sometimes.
