ASH URGES GLORY RUN

- By JEREMY CROSS

ASHLEY YOUNG insists Manchester United need to start winning trophies again to uphold the tradition of the club.

United have endured a difficult campaign so far and are already 16 points behind league leaders Liverpool.

Jose Mourinho’s side won nothing last season and their last piece of silverware was the Europa League in May 2017.

United have not been Premier League champions since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in 2013.

Young (below) insists winning trophies is in the club’s DNA and that Mourinho’s squad must live up to expectations.

The United ace said: “When you join a club like Manchester United, as soon as you walk through the door, if you don’t know the history, give it a week and you will know the history.

History

“You get that feel of the club, you know the size of the club. For me it’s the biggest club in the world, always has been and always will be.

“I know the history, the boys in the squad know the history. It’s all about winning trophies, winning silverware.

“That’s what the club is all about.

“I’ve been part of that and we’ve had successful years in the last couple of years. I’m 33 nearly 34 now and that’s not changed for me.

“I still want trophies and that’s what everyone in the squad wants.

“We’re out there to win games and trophies for this fantastic club, if we can put on performances like the one against Fulham, then I don’t think it is far away.”

United travel to Valencia for their final Champions League group game tomorrow, before taking on Jurgen Klopp’s men on Sunday.

They will go to Anfield as underdogs and Young has urged a repeat the display in Saturday’s 4-1 thrashing of Fulham in a bid to cause an upset.

Young, who is keen to sign a contract extension at Old Trafford, said: “Everyone knows what the Liverpool games are like.

“It is never an easy game when you go to Anfield.

“But we should play exactly the way we’ve shown against Fulham, go there and play the way the manager wants us to play.”
