‘DON’T SWEAR AT FEMALE COMMANDOS’

‘Offence’ fear in rules change

WOMEN commandos will not be shouted at in training in case it offends them, the Daily Star can reveal.

For the first time women will be able to join the Royal Marine Commandos on the front line.

But before they can wear the coveted green beret, they must pass the gruelling Commando course at Lympstone, Devon.

Those who pass through the 32week course usually experience shouting from training staff who bark abuse and orders.

But according to one senior Navy source, the use of what is described as “black humour” will be scrapped when it comes to training women recruits.

They said: “The physical standards will not change, but some of the black humour used to encourage recruits will be toned down.

“Used in the right context it is useful, but some could view it as offensive.

“There are clear areas, which may be obvious, where you can shout words of encouragement to male rookies, which would not be appropriate to females and that will stop.”

The head of the Commandos – who helped recapture the Falklands – has said the physical requirements will not change.

Recruits of both genders will face a 30-mile timed run across Dartmoor in full kit, an assault course, endurance course and a speed march.

Major General Charlie Strickland said: “There will be absolutely no changes to Commando standards, training will be the same for men and women. I wholeheartedly encourage interested men or women to give it a go.”
