GANGLAND Mr Big Paul Massey died after he was sprayed with 18 bullets from an Uzi submachine gun outside his home, a court heard.

Mr Massey, below, suffered catastrophic injuries after a gunman opened fire as he returned from an off-licence, jurors were told.

Some of his injuries showed he tried to fend off the bullets with his bare hands before diving behind bins in Salford.

Despite suffering

20 entry and exit wounds he still managed to make a series of

999 calls for help, Liverpool Crown Court has heard.

Pathologist Dr Philip Lumb, who examined the dad-of-five’s body, said the shot that killed him pierced his heart and right lung.

Others hit his right elbow, wrist and hand.

One round hit three fingers, severing one and slicing the tip off another. Another bullet went straight through his left arm. Bone fragments from his shot left shin were found on the ground between his legs.

His head, neck and chest showed evidence of superficial grazings. Though fatally wounded the jury heard Mr Massey was able to use his phone to seek help. Dr Lumb said: “These gunshot wounds don’t cause instantaneous death. There may be a few minutes where an individual may be able to perform some activities.” Alleged gunman Mark Fellows, 38, and Steven Boyle, 35, who the prosecution say was his “spotter”, deny murdering Mr Massey, 55, in 2015. They also deny murdering Mr Massey’s pal John Kinsella, 53, in May on a woodland path near the M62 at Rainhill, Merseyside. The trial continues.
