Cyclist Thomas is tour de force
Aggers slams Gaz
GARY Lineker has been slammed by BBC colleagues for spouting his strong views on Brexit.
The Match Of The Day host has been campaigning for a second referendum to seven million followers on Twitter.
But his outspoken anger over Brexit has upset colleagues who claim BBC employees should be seen as “politically neutral”. They say he is given special treatment with Beeb bosses because he is such a huge star.
BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew raged on Twitter: “Gary. You are the face of BBC Sport.
“Please observe BBC editorial guidelines and keep your political views, whatever they are and whatever the subject, to yourself.
“I’d be sacked if I followed your example. Thanks.”
But the defiant former England striker hit back – pointing out that only BBC news and current affairs staff are banned from airing political points.
Danger
He said: “I’m the face of my own Twitter account. I’ll continue to tweet what I like and if folk disagree with me, then so be it.
“Thank you so much for your concern, which, I imagine wouldn’t be a concern at all if you agreed with me.”
Agnew – who’s known as “Aggers” in the Test Match Special commentary box – later confirmed he actually voted remain in the referendum.
In a passionate message to fans, Lineker said: “I express my views on Brexit because I care deeply about our country and its people and fear we’re in danger of doing irreparable damage.
“I defend your right to have opposing views and I HITTING BACK: Lineker
ATTACK: Agnew hope I’m wrong and you’re right.”
But some followers hit out at his stance, with one raging: “When will you follow your employer’s guidance?”
Lineker replied: “When I get a job in news or current affairs.”
