FLOOD alerts are in place across the country as 2.8million extra cars hit the roads for the Christmas getaway.

Forecaster­s put 32 in place across England and Wales yesterday.

Chaos is expected over the weekend with Britain set to be hit by downpours which will add to the transport woes.

England and Wales will see the wet weather spread tomorrow.

Matthew Box, of the Met Office, said: “Cold and rain pushes across those two countries.”

Parts of the UK could see up to 30mm of rain tomorrow.

The RAC is predicting the most congested rush for years.

Meanwhile, huge numbers of holidayhun­ters will spark an early stampede for summer getaways this weekend.

Travel operators have launched a preChristm­as price war, taking the axe to hundreds of 2019 package trips abroad.

Victoria Bacon, from the Associatio­n of Travel Agents, said: “This is the peak booking period for the travel industry and savvy bookers can take advantage of great deals, such as discounts, free child places and lots of choice.”

Families can cash in on trips to Europe, the Mediterran­ean and furtherflu­ng destinatio­ns as companies shave off hundreds of pounds. And the number of Brits planning a getaway has soared to a near all-time high.

Research by First Rate Exchange has revealed 55% plan to head abroad with many already booked up for next year.

Head of insight Arun Mylavarapu said: “The numbers who have already booked is a reassuring confirmati­on that holidaying abroad is a part of their lifestyle they are not willing to forgo.” Struggling High Street shops will start Boxing Day sales on December 23 this year.

Debenhams will lead the charge with a desperate bid to boost sales.
