Jail after home rampage

THE son of a police and crime chief has been jailed after his father pressed charges following a drunken rampage.

Sherinder Dhindsa flew into a rage at his parents’ home.

He picked up a £400 TV and smashed it by throwing it at a radiator.

His dad Hardyal Dhindsa, who is Derbyshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, said he and his wife had no choice but to press charges as it was the latest in a string of alcohol-fuelled incidents.

Mr Dhindsa said: “We still love him. I want to help him – we want our son back but we can’t have him living with us for our own safety.

“We do want to support him, but in a structured way outside of our home.”

Mr Dhindsa added: “We hope he continues to get help for his addiction and problems inside his head.

“We still want contact with him. We just don’t want him to come to our own home.” Weeks before the rampage, Sherinder, 31, had refused to take a breathalyser test following a car accident.

That incident saw him handed a suspended jail sentence and given a 40-month driving ban.

But Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court was told that just days after the court hearing he turned violent at his parents’ home in Derby and they fled into their bedroom.

Magistrates imposed a two-year restraining order on Sherinder that prohibits him from going to his parents’ house.

He was also jailed for eight weeks and, in addition, magistrates activated an 11-week suspended sentence handed to him at his previous court appearance.

It means Sherinder received a 19-week prison sentence in total.
