Our hopes for 2019

-

IT’S almost 2019 and time to draw up a wish-list of the fights we want to see in the next 12 months.

The last year has delivered some huge clashes, from Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s rematch with Gennady Golovkin to Tyson Fury’s dramatic draw with Deontay Wilder and not forgetting Josh Warrington’s stunning win over Carl Frampton.

Starsport looks forward to four fights we would love to see in 2019.

Anthony Joshua

v Tyson Fury

The perfect scenario would be Fury beating Wilder in a rematch this spring for the WBC title before a summer showdown with WBA, WBO and IBF champion Joshua.

It would be the biggest fight ever to be staged in the UK, as two Brits tussle it out to be crowned undisputed king of the heavyweight division.

It would also be one of the biggest sporting events in this country since the London 2012 Olympics.

Vasyl Lomachenko

v Mikey Garcia

Garcia has dared to be great by going up to welterweight to take on Errol Spence Jnr for the IBF title.

It is a bold move and could be a step too far for the American, who should have stayed at lightweight to decide the best in that division.

Facing Ukrainian superstar Lomachenko would have been a mouth-watering prospect.

There is still an outside chance that could happen though if Garcia comes back down.

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez v

Gennady Golovkin 3

It has been a long time since boxing got a trilogy that captured the imagination of the world.

The two previous meetings between these two middleweight superstars have been special.

But both have had controversial cards which has left the appetite whet for one more meeting.

Golovkin deserves his shot at revenge, Alvarez needs to silence the doubters who don’t believe he did enough to win their second fight. It is likely to happen in September. Anthony Fowler v

Ted Cheeseman

This is not a worldwide event that the previous three fights would be but it is a top domestic dust-up.

Two rising light-middleweight stars meeting would be a headline act anywhere in the country.

Fowler has the Olympic status as a standout amateur, while Cheeseman has carved out a career working up the professional ranks.

They are both promoted by Eddie Hearn, the Matchroom chief needs to put them in with each other.
