Foles is back to Phil gap

NICK FOLES’ fairy-tale season with the Philadelphia Eagles shows no sign of ending after he set up the defending champions’ showdown with the Chicago Bears.

The 29-year-old back-up quarterback led Phili to last season’s Super Bowl after stepping in for injured first choice Carson Wentz.

And few would bet against him doing exactly the same again this season after he replaced Wentz at the start of last month and turned in an incredible show in last week’s 24-0 win over the Washington Redskins.

That victory – coupled with the Minnesota Vikings’ defeat to the Bears – booked the Eagles the last wild-card spot in the NFC and a meeting, coincidentally, with Chicago on Sunday.

Wentz suffered a rib injury and made way for third-choice QB Nate Sudfeld before the end of the game but is expected to be fit for the weekend.

Coach Doug Pederson said: “We’ll take care of him and make sure he’s ready for Sunday.”

Amazingly, it seems likely the Eagles will let Foles (above) go this summer in search of regular first-team action and build their future around Wentz.

But before he leaves, Foles and his team look in the mood to cause more upsets.

Safety Malcolm Jenkins said: “We are not sneaking into the play-offs. We are here to do some damage.”

In the other wild-card clashes this weekend, the LA Chargers will visit the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

And 24 hours earlier, the Houston Texans host the Indianapolis Colts, while the Seattle Seahawks travel to the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys are the sleeping giants of the NFL and are without a Super Bowl win since 1995, though high-profile owner Jerry Jones is desperate to put an end to that drought.

Jones said: “I want it for everything we stand for. I want it for these players. Obviously, we want it for our fans.”
