YOUNGER TRAIN TO BE PRIEST

- by ANTONY THROWER antony.thrower@dailystar.co.uk

MILLENNIALS are joining the church in record numbers after being drawn in by bonuses such as free housing and food.

The number of youngsters applying to become Anglican priests has shot up by a third in the last two years.

In a bid to refresh its image, the Church of England has started actively seeking younger clergy members.

Nearly one in three of those entering training for the priesthood is now under the age of 32. The number has risen from 128 people in 2016 to 169 last year. But one in five of those aged 18 to 24 revealed they only went to church once last year.

To make sure people are certain, youngsters can take a year-long placement.

Around 150 people have taken part in the church’s Ministry Experience Scheme. Julian Hubbard, director of the Church of England’s ministry division, said: “I am delighted we seen a rise in the number of vocations to the priesthood for the second year running.

“We are particularly pleased to see the increase in the number of young women and men.

“We give heartfelt thanks for the prayers and the hard work of all in the churches and dioceses that have been involved in guiding these candidates along their journey and pray that God will continue to bless and guide them.”

More than half of those entering the church are now women.

Catherine Nancekievill, the church’s head of discipleship and vocation, said: “This rise in vocations to ordained ministry is a welcome answer to our prayers and hard work across the country to ensure we continue to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to every community.”
