WHAT’S HOT TO WATCH TODAY

- MIKE WARD

WHEN asked what my biggest TV wishes were for

2019, there was one that stood out above the rest. “I wish there were more opportunities,” I replied, “for Bobby Davro, Joe Swash, Cheryl Baker, Stephen Bailey and Michelle Collins to appear on the same show at the same time, ideally a five-part series in which, for no apparent reason, they all go camping together in Dorset.”

And guess what? The TV gods have smiled on me. CELEBRITY FIVE GO CAMPING starts at

8pm tonight on Channel 5.

Are you as thrilled as I am? You can’t possibly be. ALSO tonight we have the final part of BILLY CONNOLLY: MADE IN SCOTLAND (9pm, BBC2), continuing this look at the life and career of Britain’s all-time funniest comedian (yes, he is, don’t argue).

Billy takes particular delight in reminding us that one of his most famous routines, about having had to wear knitted swimming trunks as a kid, was no mere figment of his imagination. OTHER comedy highlights tonight include the return of Greg Davies in series five of the excellent CUCKOO (11.25pm, BBC1), plus a guest appearance from Romesh Ranganathan in

(8pm, Channel 4), a key element of the comedy here being that Romesh is a vegan, and vegan food isn’t known for making Jamie and Jimmy cry: “Ooh, yummy, our favourite…”. FINALLY, TOP OF THE POPS: THE STORY OF

1987 (9pm, BBC4) looks at a year when Maggie Thatcher won a third General Election and when many Brits woke one October morning to find a tree had mysteriously crashed through their ceiling.
