Nelson Mandela House turned into yuppie homes
ONLY Fools And Horses fans are furious that Nelson Mandela House is to be flattened to make way for yuppie flats.
Harlech Tower, which depicted the Trotters’ home, will be replaced by upmarket pads.
But one fan fumed: “It should be a listed building.”
ONLY Fools And Horses fans were furious last night that Nelson Mandela House will be torn down and turned into yuppie flats.
Harlech Tower, which was used to portray the outside of the fictional home of the Trotters, is to be demolished.
The tower block is in Ealing, west London, 13 miles from where the classic sitcom was set in Peckham, south-east London.
Ealing Council granted outline planning permission for 1,950 homes in December, with more than 3,000 planned for the future. Half of the new homes will be sold to private buyers.
The rest are earmarked for affordable housing for the estate’s 5,000 existing residents.
By the time they are finished in the mid-2020s, they are expected to be worth about £1billion to the developers.
Last night fans of Del Boy and Rodney called for the “piece of British TV history” to be saved.
One wrote: “Should be a listed building.”
Supporters have even launched a petition calling for the scheme to be halted. One fan said: “You can’t knock it down!”
Barton Willmore, which secured planning permission on behalf of Acton Gardens LLP, said it was a “major step forward” for the redevelopment.
Mark Ludlow, of Acton Gardens LLP, said: “We welcome Ealing Council’s decision which enables us to create more affordable and private homes at Acton Gardens.” The Star Says:
