You all know drill! Britain’s in chiller

BIG FREEZE AS WINTER FINALLY BITES

BRITAIN will plunge into the freezer with one of the winter’s coldest weekends.

After weeks of balmy weather, temperatures are set to plummet.

The most chilly night so far saw mercury plunge to just -10C in Braemar, Aberdeens.

A cold snap of -6.1C was recorded in Oxfordshire.

Met Office spokeswoman Nicola Maxey warned that the conditions will be felt all over the country today.

The forecaster predicted: “Where we get the breaks in the cloud for sunshine, we will also get the coldest temperatures at night.”

She added that London will be hit by lows of -3C, while Newcastle and Manchester will barely scrape above freezing.

Today a thick bank of cloud will roll over Britain, bringing a chill drizzle.

Meteorologists predict a slight respite tomorrow as the Arctic front is chased by a low pressure area into the English channel.

But that could spark gale force winds which will then batter Scotland.

The Met Office has already issued yellow weather warnings for gale force winds across the north of Scotland.

Meanwhile, Britain has been warned of a megatsunami that could wipe out towns along the coast.

Professor Stephen Sparks, of the University of Bristol, said Cornwall and Devon would be battered if the Cumbre Vieja volcano in the Canary Islands erupts.

He warned: “When you have volcanic islands sticking out of the sea, they’re very unstable.

“You can get gigantic landslides when part of the island essentially collapses into the ocean. And you can get tsunamis from that and they’re quite significant.”

And British tourists have been told to avoid southern Thailand as forecasters warn a tropical storm sweeps across swathes of the country.

Storm Pabuk could spark devastating landslides and tidal surges in the region.

The Foreign Office has warned Brits against all but essential travel to provinces on the Thailand-Malaysia border, including popular tourist hotspots such as Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat.
