New life term for twisted attacker

-

MURDER BID: Chafer A CHILD killer who tried to murder a woman in a row over a garden rake while on release from prison has been given a new life sentence.

Stephen Chafer was jailed for life for sexually assaulting Lorraine Holt, three, and then knifing her to death in 1979.

And last year he launched a frenzied knife attack on Fay Mills, 60.

Mrs Mills, who has dementia, was so badly injured that police believed she was already dead when they arrived at her home in Peterborough, Cambs.

Last month Chafer, now

57, was convicted of the attempted murder of Mrs Mills and assaulting her neighbour Mark Patchett, who tried to go to her aid.

Judge David Farrell QC told him at Cambridge Crown Court yesterday: “The worrying aspect is, as with the previous murder, that you have attacked a particularly vulnerable person.”

In 1979 Chafer sexually assaulted Lorraine in Derby before stabbing her

39 times.

Judge Farrell said he would be 74 before he could be considered for release from prison.
