Mersey tie is Kee for Billy

- By LINDSAY SUTTON

ACCRINGTON striker Billy Kee is praying for a glamour tie against one of the Merseyside giants after knocking out Ipswich.

Kee’s ninth goal of the season was enough to send the Championship’s bottom club out in the third round for the ninth season in a row.

The striker (inset) wants to put the frighteners on a Premier League giant in the next round and said: “Now bring on Liverpool or Everton.

“If I’m honest, I’d love to draw a glamour club at Accrington.

“It can a horrible experience for the big boys, especially when they see our dressing rooms.”

Boss John Coleman was bemused to find his League One side were the pre-match favourites.

But he said: “It shows how far we have come, and people’s changed perceptions.

“We’ve worked hard to get where we are – and that’s just 12 places below Ipswich.”

Kee’s second-half goal came from a Sean McConville free-kick, sidelined for three months with a shoulder injury and we hope this isn’t as bad as we fear. Injuries happen but it’s devastating for Shandon.”

Oxford boss Karl Robinson said: “It doesn’t look good but we’ll pray that the scan brings us better news on Monday.

“I’m on the floor with him and was nearly in tears. He’s in bits because we are people and being a good person is vital because results come and go just like praise and criticism.

“This was his first game back from a bad injury after nearly three months out and I saw the pain and adversity he went through and how he came back the hard way, running his socks off.” headed back across goal by Ben Richards-Everton for Kee to nod past keeper Bartosz Bialkowski.

Sam Finley and Jordan Clark were both foiled by Bialkowski, but Accy keeper Connor Ripley had to stop Freddie Sears’ late efforts at the other end. Ipswich loan signings Callum Elder and Will Keane had solid but unspectacular debuts. But boss Paul Lambert faces a huge job to avoid the drop to League One after winning one of 12 games since coming in. Lambert said: “I still believe I can keep this club in the Championship.

“It’s going to be hard work and I need financial support over the next few weeks of the transfer window, but it can be done.

“It’s an absolute disgrace that a great club like this is in this state. I’ve never had to look at turning things round as much as this. There have to be a lot of changes.”
