Deep freeze killer chaos heading towards the UK

EUROPE was put on red alert last night as killer snow chaos trapped hundreds in their cars and homes.

And the wintry blast could be heading towards the UK.

At least 15 people have died in the extreme weather conditions this week.

Among the dead was a 16-year-old boy who was buried in an avalanche on a ski slope near St Anton am Arlberg, Austria. A 54-year-old woman died in her car in stationary traffic on a motorway in Germany.

Horrendous

About 10ft of snow has fallen in parts of Germany and Austria where the mercury has plummeted to -20C.

The extreme conditions have been caused by a jetstream pushing cold air from the Arctic over the continent.

But the UK has so far been protected from the brunt of it.

Now bookies say it will not be long before we are shivering in horrendous conditions too.

Coral predict a deep freeze is going to hit in the coming weeks and it is odds on at 1-3 for snow in London by the end of this month.

Spokesman Harry Aitkenhead said: “There’s no escaping the plummeting temperatures now and all the signs are pointing to snow sooner rather than later.

“Our odds show that Londoners had better get prepared for the snow to fall before the end of the month.

“There’s every chance this cold snap will last long into March and that means there’s a very real possibility that this winter could take its place in the record books as the coldest ever.”

German forecasters are blaming the deep freeze on climate change as weather patterns take longer to disperse.

There were more than 100 car accidents caused by snow as Germany’s road network came to a stop.

Dozens of residents in rural towns had to have food delivered by trucks as the weather shows no sign of abating. Some trains had to be dug out with shovels.
