Spot fight

- By DAVID McDONNELL

GABRIEL JESUS has warned Sergio Aguero he is ready to take his place up front for Manchester City.

Jesus plundered four goals in City’s 9-0 Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg win over Burton and says he is ready to challenge Aguero for the right to lead Pep Guardiola’s attack.

Asked if he can displace Argentina ace Aguero, who was not involved against Burton, Jesus said: “Sure, like when I first came here.

“I’ve always respected and will always respect Sergio and the manager’s decisions, but it’s up to me to pursue a place in the team.”

Amazing

Brazil striker Jesus, who has 13 goals this season, took Aguero’s place shortly after arriving at City from Palmeiras for £27m two years ago.

Injury then saw him sidelined for six weeks and another injury ruled him out for two months last season.

But Jesus, 21, is determined to make up for lost time and prove he deserves a chance to lead the line for City.

“I try to show that on a daily basis, training hard to try to get into the team.

“I know Sergio has had an amazing season, but I’m here and able to help whenever they need me.

“I haven’t played a lot in the Premier League this season and I want to help, but respecting everyone.

“I’ve already forgotten the problems that I had last year and I’m really happy now. My family are going back to Brazil, unfortunately.

“But that’s an issue at home, not on the pitch.

“I’ve had amazing days beside them and I’m grateful for the family I have.

“They’re always beside me and allow me just to focus on football.

“I’ll miss them, obviously, but I’m mentally stronger now and I just want to play well, score goals and help the team.”
