Clyne crystal clear on picking Cherries

- By JOHN CROSS

NATHANIEL CLYNE says he has a clear conscience after angering old boss Neil Warnock in order to join Bournemouth. Clyne, who was handed his debut by Warnock as a rookie full-back in 2008, was blasted by the Cardiff manager for rejecting a loan reunion. Warnock believed a deal was in place but the Liverpool defender signed for the Cherries for the rest of the season instead.

Clyne, 27, said: “Nothing was agreed. It was just talks, really, between my agent and the clubs and ultimately I made the decision to come to Bournemouth.

‘‘I just want to kick on now and play for Bournemouth. “My intention wasn’t to hurt anyone in any way, it was just down to footballing reasons. I have a good relationship with him (Warnock) and I enjoyed working with him at Crystal Palace. I have a lot of respect for him.

“It was just down to footballing reasons between Bournemouth and Liverpool.

“Bournemouth is a good club on the up, great quality players, style of play is similar to what I play with at Liverpool. The manager is good.

Energy

“I am looking forward to the challenge and can’t wait to get going. I hope I can offer a lot of energy down the right wing, solid defensively and generally help the team with my experience to push up the league again.”

Clyne will face Everton tomorrow but fellow new boy Dominic Solanke must wait for his debut because of a hamstring injury.

Solanke quit Liverpool, where he was struggling for game-time, to join Bournemouth for £19m earlier this month – and says Jadon Sancho has become a trailblazer for a whole generation of English talent.

Solanke says Sancho’s move to Borussia Dortmund has “affected everyone” because young players want to go out and play rather than get trapped on the sidelines at big clubs.

Sancho’s form in Germany has already seen him fast-tracked into Gareth Southgate’s England set-up.

England Under-21 striker Solanke said: “Sancho is doing so well in Germany and a lot of players would like to follow his path.

“What he has done, getting into the England team at such a young age, it will influence a lot of young players.

“It is affecting everyone and everyone wants to do well. I think every footballer just wants to play, especially when you are young.

“You want to show what you can do, so I think you have to wait for the right time. I’m looking forward to playing here at Bournemouth.”
