WHAT’S HOT TO WATCH TODAY

SO we’re now, what, a fortnight into the New Year. And I’m guessing your radical fitness regime is still bang on track, right?

In the unlikely event that it isn’t, you might want to take a look at the latest episode of THE TWINSTITUTE (8.30pm).

This, you may recall, is a series on BBC2, hosted by brothers Chris and Xand van Tulleken, in which 30 sets of identical twins are being experimented on in the name of scientific discovery, and don’t seem to have a problem with that, even though I’ve just made it sound horrendously sinister. I mention it because one of tonight’s experiments finds Chris and Xand comparing different fitness programmes.

Specifically, they’re asking whether high-intensity training – which is the type in which you do frantic bursts of exercise for short periods until you feel as though you’re about to drop dead – is more effective than longer bursts of more moderate exercise, where the sensation of imminent death can takes several more minutes to manifest itself.

My guess is, the regime that comes out on top in this test will be the one you’ll be eagerly following from now on. Am I right? Thought so.

Also on the programme there’s a look at different methods of beating motion sickness.

To establish just how queasy it can make them feel (apparently it has significantly different effects on different people), each volunteer is asked to sit in a special spinning chair, which then revolves until they’re left feeling totally nauseous.

In that respect, it’s very much like the early rounds of The Voice.
