That's a lotta lolly for cauli
Pub’s £28 bill for 2 pieces of cauliflower
A PUB chain faced a backlash after selling cauliflower steaks for a staggering £28 – the same price as two prime cuts of Aberdeen Angus.
Young’s has been accused of cashing in on the clean-eating craze – which has seen millions of Brits go vegan for January – after the offer went viral.
Meat eaters can dine on two 6oz steaks with triple cooked chips and watercress for £28.
But the chain was charging the same for two veggie steaks, which consist of roasted slices of cauliflower drizzled with oil, served with tomatoes, mushrooms and mash.
The costly cauli sparked fury on social media after it emerged the meal could have been put together in a supermarket for just £2.10.
The firm got the collywobbles after complaints and last night removed the item from the menu. Twitter user Jamie Klingler had shared a pub board promoting the offer at the Queen’s in Primrose Hill, north London. She wrote: “£28 for two pieces of cauliflower. That’s mental. Like properly mental.”
The post has received more than a thousand likes and retweets online.
The offer was only available during January, when many Brits attempt so-called Veganuary by steering clear of meat and dairy for the month.
On Twitter, Young’s defended the dish and claimed it was of “premium quality”.
Responding to a customer questioning the cost, a spokesman said: “Both dishes are of premium quality, the vegan dish is an alternative for those who do not eat meat. We also have other options available on our main menu.”
Young’s has more than 200 pubs in London and the south of England.
Last night a spokesman said: “We always seek to offer our customers a range of vegetarian and vegan dishes and wanted to ensure that choice extended to this offer.
“Having listened to the feedback, we have removed the cauliflower dish and will remain committed to offering value and choice across our menu for all our customers.”
