Duffy’s loo-ky charm

- By CHRIS HATHERALL

SHANE DUFFY admits the Old Trafford toilets will be the setting for one of the more bizarre superstitions in football today.

The Brighton defender, 27, likes to pick a “lucky cubicle” when he arrives in an away dressing room and will only use that one for the rest of the day.

He admits others may think he’s gone round the u-bend but it seems to be doing the job for him, with Duffy scoring three times on the road this term in Brighton’s three away wins in league and cup.

“It started a couple of years ago,” he said.

“I like to pick a lucky toilet at away games. If there are three cubicles, for instance, and somebody is in my one I have to wait.

Weird

“Sometimes I’ll move people across and say, ‘Get out of there’ even though the others are empty.

“It’s weird, I know, but all the boys know about it now.

“When I go to Old Trafford I’ll do the same. It’s the weirdest superstition and I get a few looks. But that’s what superstitions are like. I hope it helps us.”

Duffy switched his squad number from 22 to 4 this season – and the goals have followed.

“I fancied a change and I hadn’t scored in that number,” said the Irishman.

“As soon as I got the new shirt our kit man said, ‘You’ll score four goals now this season’.

“In fact I’ve got four already so I hope he’s wrong. Another one at Old Trafford would be perfect.”
