WHAT’S HOT TO WATCH TODAY

THEY’VE changed the whole format for EUROVISION: YOU DECIDE 2019 (7.30pm, BBC2). No idea why. Guess it’s kept someone busy.

For this year’s contest, being held in Tel Aviv on May 18, we have just three songs competing to represent us. But to add an extra element of, I dunno, excitement or something, tonight’s selection show will feature two different versions of each, performed by two different acts. The judging panel will decide which one it prefers in each case, then leave it up to us viewers to choose which of the remaining three should be our Eurovision entry.

And the identity of the six acts competing for this honour? Ah, well, here’s the thing. The BBC has clearly listened long and hard – and about time, too, right? – to those who’ve argued we should go back to the old system of sending recognised stars to represent us, and then it’s gone, naah, sod that. Hence we have Anisa, Kerrie-Anne, MAID, Jordan Clarke, Holly Tandy and Michael Rice.

As for the three competing songs, they’re called Freaks, Sweet Lies and You Know Where You Can Shove Your Backstop.

Do bear in mind before casting your vote, however, that I’ve made that last one up for comic effect. ELSEWHERE tonight, we get to learn a whole lot more about new vicar Will Davenport’s background in this week’s episode of GRANTCHESTER (9pm, ITV). It turns out he’s a far more tortured soul than we might initially have thought, with a troubled family background and a load of personal demons. So that’s a relief, isn’t it? How awful if he’d turned out to be happy.
