HORSE FLU BOMBSHELL

- by JAMES CAVEN

We tried to make the best of a bad situation and desperately come up with some alternatives to fill your time…

HOW will we survive without our weekend flutter on the nags?

That is the question facing millions of us in the wake of the devastating equine flu outbreak. Shell-shocked and on auto-pilot, I head straight to a bookies but I’m met with screens full of cancelled meets up and down the land.

With some money burning a hole in my pocket I decide to change tack and put the house on one of many reality TV specials.

If I can’t bet on the gee-gees, why not have a punt on the GC? Gemma Collins at 25-1 to win Dancing On Ice with Coral, I like those odds.

But it still doesn’t scratch the itch and I decide to clear my head by feeding the ducks. Unfortunately horses are clearly on the mind and they think I’m quackers when I offer up an apple.

If the racing won’t come to me, I’ll have to make my own fun.

Maybe I can recreate the 3.30pm at Wolverhampton in the park?

Alas, I fall at the first fence.

It looks like the only sensible option is to cry into a pint of Guinness at the appropriately-named White Horse And Bower pub.

Eureka! The black stuff, as always, has provided me with inspiration.

Flights to Ireland, where there is still a healthy racing calendar from £63? It’s time to pack my bags!
