18,700 jobs toll in High Street crisis
NEARLY 400 jobs a day have been axed or put at risk on Britain’s struggling high Street since Christmas.
Mounting costs, Brexit uncertainty and the rise of internet shopping have seen
18,722 roles made redundant or threatened since December 25.
In total, 14,377 jobs have been lost while a further
4,345 are in jeopardy.
The staggering numbers come after big names such as HMV, Patisserie Valerie and Oddbins ran into trouble.
Robert Hayton of data firm Altus said: “It remains tough for high Street businesses right now.
“Brexit uncertainty is also hurting both manufacturers and the services industries.”
