Polars’ nuclear island ‘siege’
CHAOS: Bear on raid A PACK of more than 50 aggressive polar bears is terrorising Russians on a remote Arctic island.
They have chased residents and entered office and apartment blocks.
A state of emergency has been called on the nuclear testing archipelago Novaya Zemlya, which has a population of about 2,000.
The focus is the town of Belushya Guba, where 52 polar bears have been counted scavenging for food in local dumps.
Residents said they were “afraid to go outside” and daily life was “in turmoil”.
Head of the local administration, Zigansha Musin, said he had lived in Novaya Zemlya since 1983, yet he’d never seen such a polar bear invasion.
Despite the siege, residents have been warned they will face prosecution if they shoot the endangered species.
Resident Anastasia Bondarenko, said the bears were “no longer afraid of humans”.
She added: “When they walk under your window at night, it is creepy.”
