Bruce axe threat

-

STEVE BRUCE admits some big name stars face the chop as he looks to trim Sheffield Wednesday’s bloated squad.

The Owls are overloaded with senior pros, and new boss Bruce wants to ditch eight this summer and work with a group of 24. He said: “That is enough these days and then, of course, it opens up the door for the young ones to come in and train with the first team if you’ve got one or two injuries. “We will eventually head towards that size. It’s what I have always tried to do with my squads, although it’s a while off yet.

“At the moment the players are all working very hard – not least the ones who will be out of contract in the summer and itching to land a new deal.

“It’s an important time for them now and, over the next two or three months, they will all get the chance to prove themselves.”

The Owls head into tonight’s showdown at Millwall still harbouring hopes of making the play-offs despite being 11 points adrift of the top six.
