SERGIO’S BERN-UP

Striker’s team-mates are lost for words

- By GIDEON BROOKS

BERNARDO SILVA admits that Sergio Aguero’s team-mates are running out of words to describe how important he is to Manchester City.

The Argentina striker struck a second hat-trick inside eight days on Sunday to put City back on top and himself level with Mo Salah at the top of the league scoring charts on 14.

Silva said the fact Aguero, 30, has been producing the goods regularly for eight years puts him in a league of his own.

“I think you don’t need any more words to describe him,” said Silva. “He just proves week after week, year after year just how good he is.

“It has been like eight years that he plays for Man City and it is just fantastic for us to have a striker like him scoring so many goals for us. I just hope he continues.”

Aguero is on course to breach the 20 goals mark for the fifth consecutive year and sixth in all since joining City from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

A second treble following his three goals against Arsenal nine days ago took him level with Alan Shearer’s Premier League record of 11 hattricks in an overall haul of 160 goals from 229 appearances.

City defender Oleksandr Zinchenko said: “He’s a life legend. He is on fire at the moment and we are so happy for him.” City’s 6-0 win against Chelsea took them back above Liverpool on goal difference and was one of their best of many fine performances this season, according to Silva.

“We have had a lot of very good performances,” he said.

“But this one was one of the best probably because we played against one of the best sides in the world and we beat them 6-0.”

Now the blue half of Manchester are looking to neighbours United to put a spanner in Liverpool’s works by beating them in their game in hand at Old Trafford on February 24.

Silva said City’s players are not banking on a favour, though. He added: “It is better if they lose some points but the manager and all of the players have been saying to focus on our job.

“If we don’t win our games it doesn’t matter what they do so that is the most important thing now.”

City next face Newport in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Saturday followed by the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.

Zinchenko added: “Hopefully we can win every title.

“We are going to fight for every one of them. Hopefully we can win all four.”
