THOUSANDS of racegoers were champing at the bit to get back to the betting yesterday at Plumpton.

Star man Antony Thrower spoke to several people who had found out only at the last minute the meeting could go ahead.

Lily Wilson-Davis and Samantha Jones were enjoying a work perk at the Sussex course.

Despite the joy at its return, some of the day’s racing saw as few as three runners taking to the field.

Dan Thompson, Plumpton’s chief executive, said they only found out they could race late on Monday, leading to a mad dash for tickets.

He added: “The suspension was six days but it felt like six weeks.

“We’re delighted to get the show back on the road.”

Champion jump jockey Richard Johnson said it was fantastic to be back racing and added: “Fingers crossed they’ve contained any problems.”

Pal Samantha, 24, added: “We weren’t sure we were going. It’s nice it’s back.”

Horse owner Richard Adkins said: “The British Horseracin­g Associatio­n were damned if they did and damned if they hadn’t taken action.

“We need to remember though that the flu hasn’t gone away.

“It’s still a nervous time for everybody.”
