TOP FIRM IN ‘TOXIC’ DOG FOOD RECALL

Owners in fear as pets die or fall ill

A MAJOR dog food firm is recalling five of its products amid fears it could be poisonous. Hill’s Pet Nutrition has ordered the return of its products after finding they could be toxic.

Bosses made the discovery after receiving a complaint from an owner about a sick pet.

It is feared the canned dog food being recalled contains dangerousl­y high levels of Vitamin D. Products from Hill’s Prescripti­on Diet And Science Plan range have been withdrawn from shelves across the world – but some owners in the US are already suing the company claiming the food contribute­d to their dogs’ deaths. in America – said it is only certain types of tinned dog food that are affected.

A spokesman said: “We have heard from pet owners who suspect a link between their pet’s death and prolonged vitamin D exposure. As pet owners ourselves, we know how it feels to lose a pet that you love.

“We also understand that these are complicate­d health issues and so are talking to pet owners and their vets to learn more and evaluate each specific situation.”

He added: “It’s too early to make conclusion­s on the cases.

“We take each and every concern very seriously, we are working around the clock.”

WARNING: Supplies Concerned owners have also taken to social media to share how they claim their animals had been affected.

One Facebook user said: “My dog’s food is the batches being recalled and he’s been very ill.

“Exact symptoms you give and been to emergency vet yesterday and back to local vet today.”

Another added: “My dog has been eating the recalled Z/D I’ve only just been told about the recall when I picked up his latest supply.

“I had noticed that he had been sick a few times recently.”

Vitamin D poisoning can cause a range of symptoms including vomiting, seizures and liver problems.
