A FORMER soldier who served in Iraq says he is in more danger back home in the UK – working as a bouncer at a boozer.

Phil Campbell said that even his combat experience did not prepare him for being a doorman.

The 35-year-old, who served in the Royal Logistic Corps, told how a man pulled a gun on him.

He also revealed that he has been threatened with knives and needles in recent weeks.

The dad-of-five said: “I was on the door, doing my usual duties, and about 1am I was approached by a man who tried to get in.

“He didn’t really say anything but I think he was upset because he’d had a few drinks and was refused entry.

“He produced the firearm and I grabbed it. I didn’t really think, I just reacted – I went for it. I grabbed hold of the gun and held his arms so he couldn’t fire it.” The ex-serviceman – who is a doorman at the Kings Head Sports Bar in Gravesend, Kent – said that he came to expect weapons in a war zone, but not in the UK.

And he claimed that his local town was now “more dangerous” than Iraq.

Mr Campbell added: “People seem to be wanting to arm themselves a bit more because they know they’ll be refused entry or they’re taking weapons with them for self defence.

“We do need more of a police presence in the town centre.”

Armed police were called to the King’s Head on February 9 after Mr Campbell was threatened with a gun. They recovered an airgun.

A recent report revealed that there had been a 50% rise in people caught in possession of firearms and knives in Gravesend over the last year, from 108 in 2017 to 159 last year.
