He’s stronger than you know
JAMES ON TOP FORM
RETURNING chart-topper James Morrison nearly gave up singing altogether.
James, whose albums Undiscovered and The Awakening reached No1, was dropped by Island Records after his last album Higher Than Here only reached No7 in 2015.
And the soul sensation, who won British Male at the BRIT Awards a decade ago, admitted it made him doubt if he had a future.
James told me: “I felt a bit useless and I thought: ‘I don’t know whether I can do this’.
“After I got dropped, I thought: ‘What’s the point? No-one is getting what I’m trying to do with my music. Maybe I’ve made my last album’.
“But once I thought I should make music on my own terms, I got excited again.”
James releases powerful comeback album You’re Stronger Than You Know on March 8. And he admitted he’s up for taking on the big stars like Ed Sheeran and George Ezra.
James laughed: “All these male singersongwriters came out who were compared to me.
“But I’m comfortable in my own shoes again now, because I’ve made a record I’m really proud of, so I don’t worry about that s**t any more!”
New single My Love Goes On is a collab with Joss Stone, and James reveals his new album almost had another stellar guest.
James said: “I nearly had a writing session with Paul Weller, but then he released his album last year and he got too busy, so that hasn’t happened yet.
“When I thought about stopping performing, I wanted to write for other artists and that’s something I’d like to push more.
“When I’m not a singer any more, I’d love to help new artists develop.
“But I hope that won’t be for a while now, because I’m so happy with how this new album has turned out.”
