GOVE’S JIBES OVER DIANA SUICIDE BID
TOP Tory Michael Gove once mocked Princess Diana and compared Prince Charles to Hitler.
He said the difference between the two men was that when the Nazi dictator’s wife “tried to commit suicide, she succeeded”.
His comments came on the 1992 Channel 4 series A Stab In The Dark. Mr Gove, a 25-year-old journalist at the time, said: “The Princess of Wales has had a difficult week.
“The papers have taken renewed interest in her eating disorders – in particular, her late-night bingeing on paracetamol.
“But you can see why she wanted out. There are more problems in living with Charles than just his not liking Dire Straits. He does go on.” The Environment Secretary then compared Hitler and Charles, saying they both believed in population control. He said: “Charles through contraception, Adolf through extermination. There is one difference however. When Adolf ’s wife tried to commit suicide, she succeeded.”
The footage caused fury online. One post read: “His joke regarding Diana trying to commit suicide is nothing but cruel and cheap.” Another tweeter said: “What a deeply unpleasant piece of work he is. To be clear I’m referring to @michaelgove not Prince Charles.”
